How to Remove Mold from Bathroom Ceiling

Published
May 10, 2020

Mold formations are pretty tough to clean and eliminate. These formations are known to infect and spread on different surfaces in your home, leading to different health concerns if left unchecked and uncleaned. Not only that, mold can also be a big eyesore for many, especially once they have found their way to your wall and yes, even your bathroom ceiling.

So what should you do the minute you discover mold formations on the bathroom ceiling? In this article, we’ll discuss the different ways that you can try out to eliminate ceiling mold using home cleaning ingredients.

Materials Needed

  1. Goggles
  2. Gloves
  3. Mask
  4. Bucket
  5. Bleach
  6. Water
  7. Dusting cloths
  8. Ladder

How to Get Rid of Mold from the Bathroom Ceiling

  1. The first step that you need to do before cleaning the mold on the ceiling is to close off the bathroom door and vents to make sure the spores can’t spread to other parts of the house.
  2. Open the bathroom window so the mold spores can exit outside your house instead.
  3. Get a mild detergent and mix it with warm water to create your cleaning solution.
  4. Apply the solution to the affected area on the ceiling and wash it thoroughly.
  5. Let the solution stay on the affected area for about 20 minutes so it can thoroughly disinfect the surface and weaken the mold’s texture.
  6. Afterwards, mix one quarter cup of bleach and one quart of water and mix both with warm water.
  7. Let the solution mix and apply it to the affected area on the ceiling.
  8. Allow the new solution to stay on the surface of the ceiling for another 20 minutes.

What to Do After Removing the Mold

After doing the previous cleaning steps to remove mold from ceiling, it’s time to treat the ceiling further with the following steps to fully eliminate the formations and prevent them from forming on the surface again.

1. Treat and disinfect the ceiling

After cleaning the bathroom ceiling, you will need to exterminate any remaining traces of spores on the surface to make sure that a mold problem will never develop again. To do this, get a borate-based detergent solution and apply it to the affected area. Since this is a powerful solution, it should not be rinsed from the surface as it will help prevent any formation of mold from happening again in the future. Borates have incredible stain-removing properties that help lessen the likelihood of bathroom mould from forming on the ceiling.

2. Control the Mold Conditions

Getting rid of mold and treating your bathroom ceiling doesn’t completely mean that you will never experience such cases from popping up again. Because mold spores thrive in an environment brought about by the bathroom’s moisture levels, having formations isn’t entirely impossible from happening again. Thus, it is always best to make sure that moisture levels are minimized and controlled. You can do this by keeping tabs on these common problems:

  • Water leaks - Having leaking water pipes can result in added moisture to the bathroom. It’s important to be on the lookout for any leakages — big or small — and act on it right away to avoid excess condensation.
  • Lack of ventilation - A well-ventilated bathroom may seem to only eliminate the feeling of humidity and moisture but it can also help prevent mold spores from sprouting. If you don’t have an exhaust fan, you can still increase ventilation in the bathroom by always keeping the door and windows open.
  • Dirty bathroom - Like with every room in your house, cleaning the washroom is very important as doing this will help eliminate the dirt and bacteria causing mold spores in the first place. Cleaning the area once or twice a week is the recommended schedule to ensure that your space stays clean, extra fresh and free from mold on ceiling. We have a complete bathroom cleaning checklist here which you can use to guide you on cleaning your whole washroom.
