The Best Ways to Clean Your Stainless Steel Appliances

Published
July 24, 2020

Stainless steel appliances are always a sight to behold. Sleek, smooth and undeniably classy, these machines can enhance any living space with their modern and matte finish. Aside from its aesthetic qualities, stainless steel is also preferred by many homeowners for being extra durable and resistant to different types of stains.

However, that doesn’t exactly mean anything made from stainless steel is already safe from rust, stains and damages. When left uncleaned and unmaintained, the surface can also start showing signs of wear and tear. So if you have any stainless steel appliance at home, you will need to find the best way to keep it extra clean and shiny.

In this article, we’ll show you the many best ways on how to clean stainless steel — from all-natural cleaning ingredients to powerful mixtures and solutions.

How to Clean Stainless Steel: 10 Best and Easy Ways

1. Dishwashing Soap and Baby Oil

If your stainless steel appliance only needs a bit of spot-cleaning and polishing, this cleaning combo is the right choice. Simply put a few drops of dish soap on a clean cloth and wipe the dirty surface repeatedly. Do this in a circular motion until you no longer see any trace of stain.

Once it’s time to polish, get a baby or mineral oil and dab a few drops on another clean cloth. Wipe the stainless steel surface carefully in either direction to bring out the shine. Do this repeatedly until you’re satisfied with the results.

2. White Vinegar and Olive Oil

If you’re all about going all-natural, then this cleaning duo is for you. Simply get your white vinegar in the kitchen and put a few drops on a microfiber cloth. You can also choose to put it on a spray bottle and spritz it directly on the affected area. Just make sure the solution gets absorbed by the stainless steel surface.

Once you’re done with the application, wipe the surface clean in the direction of the grain. Grains are the faint lines that are present on any stainless steel surface.

To polish the surface, put a few drops of olive oil on another clean cloth and begin wiping it again in the direction of the grain. For excess oil residue, you can easily remove it by using a slightly dampened cloth.

3. Carbonated drink

Apart from keeping you hydrated and extra fizzy, carbonated drinks are also a good alternative when cleaning your stainless steel appliances.

Simply dampen a cloth with any club soda drink and wipe it in the direction of the grain. Once done, give it another round of wiping using normal water. This will remove any trace of the carbonated acid present on the surface.

4. WD-40

Another effective but highly unusual way to clean your stainless steel appliance is by using WD-40. This all-in-one lubricant, oil and water-displacing spray is usually used for different types of hardware and automobile fixes. What it does is to remove any excess moisture and remove any rusty parts from different surfaces, mostly metals.

So if you have one lying around somewhere in the garage, feel free to use it as a cleaning agent for your stainless steel machine. Simply spray it directly on the appliance and wipe it away with a clean microfiber cloth.

Make sure to clean out any excess WD-40 residue after you’re done cleaning. While it can help protect your appliance from additional stains and rust, it’s also a petroleum-based product that can be harmful for your health.

5. Lemon Oil Furniture Polish

If you want to clean your appliance while giving it a fresh citrus breeze, this is the perfect cleaning agent for you. Just apply some of the polish on a clean towel and wipe along the grain’s direction. Avoid spraying or applying it directly on the stainless steel as this can result in excess residue that may be tough to remove.

6. Glass Cleaner

Stainless steel appliances are some of the biggest victims of fingerprints and sticky smudges. Because of their smooth and matte finish, they can be highly receptive to these issues.

If you’re dealing with this problem, simply get a special glass cleaner for fingerprints and spray some of it on a clean cloth. Wipe it on the surface in a circular motion until all fingerprint stains are removed. Make sure to rinse the surface well by wiping it dry with another clean towel.

7. Flour

If you have a stainless steel sink and want to clean it thoroughly, this cleaning tip is for you.

Start by cleaning the sink by rinsing it well and getting rid of any food lumps, grease and grime. Once it has gone dry, pour a generous amount of flour on the area. For good measure, it needs to be covered in flour. The last step is to get a clean soft cloth and wipe it in a circular motion. Wipe and buff the sink until it becomes shiny and new again.

8. Diluted Vinegar

For limescale stains, use diluted vinegar as your main cleaning solution. Simply apply it on a clean microfiber cloth and wipe it on the surface. Make sure to do this along with the direction of the grain. Wipe and buff it until you’re satisfied with the results.

9. Mild Acetone Solution

Dealing with sticky tape residue? Use a few drops of mild acetone solution to break away the sticky marks and texture from the surface. Just apply it directly on a cloth and wipe it to the stainless steel’s grain’s direction.

10. Microfiber Cloths

If you’re not dealing with any dirt or stain and just want to give your stainless steel some good wiping action, use microfiber cloths. All you have to do is slightly dampen the cloth with clean water and you’re good to go!
